Statement by Phillip Adams AO in Support of Canberra Candlelight Vigil for #Assange
I’m beyond anger and shame over our treatment of refugees — right up there with the endless disgrace of our destruction of Aboriginal culture and community, our proud record in environmental protection and that long running version of Apartheid, our White Australia Policy.
But now my anger and rage is focused on one refugee — the most famous refugee in the world. Julian Assange — abandoned and vilified by his government.
On my recent visit to see Julian in the Ecuadorian Embassy I was deeply alarmed by both the helplessness of his situation and by the deterioration of his health. Gillard, Roxon and the rest on both sides of the house are behaving appallingly — the usual arse-licking of the US that passes for policy in so many areas.
I’ve supported Julian since his hacking days and signed up for the advisory board of WikiLeaks during the planning period, and will continue to back him in his courageous struggles against bad governments everywhere.
But right now the government we must attack is Australia’s. With the US and Sweden’s close behind. Julian’s case is Australia’s Dreyfus case.
