Julian Assange’s mother has accused Foreign Minister Bob Carr of being either a stooge of the US or not caring about her son.
“Which is it?” Christine Assange asked AAP.
Ms Assange is furious about the foreign minister’s comments about her son’s political asylum bid.
Mr Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, will soon learn whether Ecuador will give him political asylum, a last-ditch effort to avoid extradition to Sweden to face sex-crime allegations.
Mr Assange fears removal to Sweden could lead to extradition to the US to face charges for WikiLeaks’ release of secret diplomatic cables.
Mr Carr was dismissive on Thursday of Mr Assange’s concerns about extradition, saying the US could just as easily seek extradition from the UK.
Ms Assange said Mr Carr was mistaken.
She said she handed the minister’s staff a full briefing on the case and her son’s concerns regarding extradition weeks ago.
“Either one of two things has happened here,” she said.
“He’s decided not to read it because he doesn’t care, because he’s getting his orders from the US anyway, so he doesn’t have to think, or he’s incompetent.”
Mrs Assange said there had been no consular assistance, and she was growing more worried.
“This is a person who is uncharged, unquestioned, decorated all around the world for his journalism,” she said.
“It’s really awful, here’s my kid over there, alone in a foreign embassy with the cops out the side salivating.
“It’s absolutely disgusting.”
